Venous Ulcer

Venous Ulcer

It is a type of wound that occurs around the ankle and on the leg below the knee. It is also called varicose scar.

It is also known as a leg wound. These wounds which are difficult to recover take a long time to heal and may recur after healing. The disease is more common among women over 45 years of age.

HOW DOES A VENOUS ULCER OR LEG WOUND OCCUR?

The blood that goes down in our body with the help of gravity is sent back to the heart with the help of our veins. There are small valves in our veins that help the blood that goes down to go back to the heart. With the deterioration of the tissues of these valves in the vein, the blood goes down. Clot and pressure occur in the veins and the veins become clogged. The blood cannot go up easily and blood pools is formed on the lower side of the leg. Over time, the tissues cannot withstand the blood pressure and wounds begin to appear on the leg.

In short, Venous Ulcer wound is caused by venous occlusion. The constant pooling of blood in the leg changes the color of the skin in that area and causes wounds over time.

WOUND CARE IN VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY / VENOUS ULCER AND WOUND CARE

Among wound types, Venous ulcer wounds are classified as late-healing wounds. Medical treatment of the wounds on the wrist and leg and hygienic dressing at regular intervals are the two elements that are necessary for the healing of the wound.

Wound dressing of Venous ulcer should be done hygienically and the risk of infection of the wound should be eliminated. Wound Care should be done simultaneously with the treatment of venous insufficiency. If the wound is not taken care of, it progresses to the bone and causes bone marrow inflammation. When Osteomyelitis (Bone marrow inflammation) occurs, even if the wound seems to be closed from the top, it still has the potential to open which reduces the patient’s quality of life.

It is very important to wear compression stockings before the wound is formed. People in the risk group of Venous Ulcer should pay extra attention to varicose stockings and bandages.
